We offer progressive riding lessons to children aged 5 and upwards and to adults of all ages. Lessons can either be as part of a group or individually. The progressive nature of our teaching means that we encourage customers to book a regular weekly lesson. Our BHS qualified and skilled teachers also follow the UKCC approach to sports coaching.
Our childrens group lessons have six people riding together. Once a group is established we work hard to keep the group together as we find that the children can be supportive to each other. Six children provides a balance between the fun that they can have together and the concentration required of them to develop their riding.
For adult group lessons we generally have three or four adults working together. The smaller number of adults reflects the fact that adults can take the additional focus applied in the smaller lesson size.
We have childrens lesson at either 4.30pm or 5.30 pm from Monday to Friday and all day Saturday from 9am to 6.15pm. We don't currently teach on a Sunday as we like to give our horses a day off once a week.
Adults lessons are usually booked around these times, but evening lessons take place from 7.30pm to 8.30pm or during the day from 9.30am on weekdays.
Our lessons run throughout the year (not just school term time) and in the school holidays we also offer "Own a Pony" days and "Gymkhana Games Training Sessions"
Own a Pony days begin at 8.30am on the morning. 6 children join us for the day and spend the morning preparing the ponies and stables, grooming them and mucking out stables. After a mid morning snack we then head out on a 2 hour hack through the countryside. On returning back to the stables we have lunch (usually Pizza and chips) and then learn how to clean tack. After the tack is cleaned we groom our ponies once more and then get ourselves and our ponies ready for a competition in the afternoon. We have an equitation competition, a showjumping contest and a games competition with rosettes to the winners of each category. We usually finish with prize giving at around 4.30pm, finishing the day at 5.30pm.
The Games sessions last half a day and again begin at around 8.30am. 8 children take part in this activity (four in each team). We collect our ponies from the fields and give them a groom before tacking up and heading out to the arena where we get shown how to play each game and the strategies and techniques necessary for them. We can then practice each game before finishing off the morning with a competition between the two teams.
For details of when the next Own a Pony Day or Games Session is go to the diary.
Pony parties are available and are custom made to suit your requirements.
Shaun's Angels is the name of the Over Dalkeith Stables team showjumping team. We regularly enter team competitions and we are progressively getting better and better. Again the diary will detail the next competition we are entering.
